What to expect during your annual electrical safety inspection.

An electrical inspection reduces the chances of electrical damage, improves your energy output, a chance to replace poor or faulty wiring and equipment, also will ensure your home’s electrical code and safety is up to date.

What will the electrician do during my annual electrical inspection?

Test your GFCI receptacles

Commonly found in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, laundry rooms and outside, GFCI receptacle, also known as ground fault circuit interrupter, monitor for a ground fault, which is when a hot conductor meets a ground. This is a life safety device, and it WORKS!

By checking outlet performance, the electrician will ensure the GFCIs shut off when a ground fault occurs.

Check on your breaker box or fuses

If you have a breaker box, the electrician will ensure each switch is working and that the corresponding labels are correct so you can confidently control the circuits of your home. The wire connections will be torqued to the manufacture’s specs. And all dust and debris should be cleaned out now. Some contractors will also offer a FLIR thermal image of the panel to detect hot spots early.

Check all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

Your electrician will check up on the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure that they are operating properly, change any batteries needed, and check for faulty units and replace them as needed.

Test voltage and grounding of the circuits

Voltage that is too high or too low can put you and your home at risk, which is why this step is particularly important. Your electrical contractor will test voltage with a tool called a digital multimeter. This can measure current and voltage. All grounding should be tested with a grounding tester and should be under specified ohms required and a correction should be made if a deficiency is found.

This part is important. The electrician will look for things like frayed or damaged wires, overloaded extension cords, defective appliances, and light bulbs with incorrect wattage.
